Kimi Antonelli Claims U.S. Grand Prix Pole Position to Boost Formula 1 Title Bid
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for the United States Grand Prix on October 24 at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, strengthening his position as he closes in on the Formula 1 world championship.
The 20-year-old Italian posted a fastest lap of 1:34.035 during the final qualifying session, outpacing Red Bull's Max Verstappen by 0.179 seconds. The result marks Antonelli's seventh pole position of the season and his first in eight races, providing him with a critical track-position advantage ahead of Sunday's main event.
Antonelli’s initial run in Q3 proved definitive. As gusty and unpredictable wind conditions picked up across the Austin circuit during the final minutes of the session, neither Antonelli nor his closest competitors were able to improve their times on their subsequent attempts. Verstappen, a four-time winner at the venue, settled for second place on the front row.
Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar qualified third with a lap of 1:34.250. Ferrari placed its drivers directly behind the top three, with Charles Leclerc taking fourth position and teammate Lewis Hamilton finishing fifth. Mercedes driver George Russell secured sixth place, while McLaren's Oscar Piastri rounded out the leading tier in seventh.
Speaking after the session, Antonelli acknowledged that changing wind patterns made the final qualifying phase challenging, but expressed satisfaction with the team's performance to lock down the front spot. The Italian driver enters the grand prix with an opportunity to secure the world championship depending on how results unfold on the track.
Verstappen will line up directly alongside Antonelli on the front row when the United States Grand Prix gets underway at the Circuit of the Americas.
