Suspect Apprehended in Campus Dormitory Closet
A 19-year-old suspect was taken into custody following an active manhunt after a shooting at Virginia State University left five people injured, according to local law enforcement. Camron Harris of Henrico, Virginia, was arrested around 4 p.m. on Saturday after officers discovered him hiding inside a closet in Seward Hall on the university campus.
Authorities confirmed that Harris is not a student at Virginia State University. He now faces eight felony warrants, including charges of malicious wounding and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Local and federal agencies are continuing to investigate the incident, and police have indicated that additional suspects may be involved.
Details of the Incident and Campus Response
The shooting occurred shortly after 1:28 a.m. on Saturday near the university's dormitories and the Quad Annexes. The violence prompted an immediate campus-wide lockdown and shelter-in-place order as emergency personnel responded to the scene and transported the injured to nearby hospitals.
According to police reports, the five victims range in ages from 17 to 23. Among those injured, one 20-year-old student has since been treated and discharged from the hospital, while another victim remains hospitalized in critical condition. Investigators noted that four of the five injured individuals are also not enrolled as students at the university.
The early-morning violence unfolded just days before classes were scheduled to resume for the new academic term, heightening safety concerns among students, faculty, and alumni. University officials and local police lifted the campus lockdown later on Saturday morning once the suspect was secured, though heightened security and police presence remained visible across the grounds as the investigation proceeded.
