Market Reacts to Hot Consumer Price Index Data
U.S. stocks experienced their steepest single-day decline in nearly three months on Wednesday, triggered by a hotter-than-anticipated consumer inflation report that revived market concerns regarding potential interest rate increases by the Federal Reserve, according to financial reporting from Reuters and Agence France-Presse.
The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite dropped 511.51 points, or 1.88 percent, to close at 26,692.87. The sharp sell-off marked the index's largest one-day percentage decline since July 23, reflecting acute vulnerability in high-growth and capital-intensive sectors as borrowing cost expectations shifted.
Broader Market Impact and Inflation Metrics
The wider market mirrored the technology sector's downward trajectory. According to market data coverage, the S&P 500 fell 1.11 percent to 7,718.94, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average registered a more modest decline of 0.1 percent.
The market reaction followed the release of consumer price figures by the Department of Labor. The U.S. Consumer Price Index rose 0.6 percent from August, pushing the annual inflation rate to 3.7 percent—accelerating from August’s 3.4 percent rate and surpassing the 3.6 percent increase anticipated by surveyed economists. Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy components, increased 0.3 percent on a monthly basis and 2.6 percent year over year, also exceeding consensus forecasts.
Pressure on Technology and Artificial Intelligence Sectors
Growth-oriented technology stocks, particularly those tied to artificial intelligence infrastructure, bore the brunt of the sell-off. Oracle shares fell approximately 9 percent, while cloud-computing firm CoreWeave dropped more than 15 percent. Additionally, a prominent semiconductor index lost about 4.3 percent during the session.
Market analysts note that artificial intelligence-related equities remain especially sensitive to changes in monetary policy due to their heavy reliance on debt-financed capital expenditures, such as large-scale data center construction. Higher interest rates increase corporate financing costs and reduce the present value of projected future earnings.
Federal Reserve Expectations
The inflation data drove Treasury yields higher as traders reassessed the trajectory of monetary policy. Market-implied probabilities for a Federal Reserve interest rate increase at the conclusion of the upcoming October 27–28 Federal Open Market Committee meeting rose to roughly 47 percent, up from approximately 20 percent prior to the report's publication, according to Reuters.
Financial institutions and investors are now monitoring upcoming economic indicators to determine whether the September acceleration represents a temporary anomaly or sustained inflationary pressure that will compel the central bank to maintain tighter financial conditions.
