Emergency Response Underway After Shallow Offshore Quake
A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off Indonesia's Flores Island early Saturday, triggering a temporary tsunami warning, widespread evacuations, and a rapidly expanding rescue operation across East Nusa Tenggara province. According to Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency, known as BNPB, the official death toll reached at least 38 to 40 fatalities by midday as emergency crews worked to reach heavily impacted districts.
The earthquake hit at approximately 5:58 a.m. local time on August 15, with its epicenter located roughly 68 kilometers north-northwest of Ende at a shallow depth. The shallow nature of the rupture amplified the ground shaking, causing structural collapses and panic in coastal communities near Maumere and surrounding areas.
Tsunami Warning Issued and Lifted
Immediately following the main shock, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami warning for vulnerable coastal stretches, prompting an estimated 2,000 residents to flee to higher ground. Officials lifted the warning about three hours later after seismic monitoring data confirmed that sea level deviations remained within safe parameters.
BMKG officials stated that the seismic event was linked to the active Flores back-arc thrust fault, a known geological feature capable of generating high-magnitude tectonic activity in the region. Authorities have cautioned residents to remain vigilant as a series of aftershocks continue to rumble through the Flores Sea.
Casualties and Structural Damage
BNPB chief Suharyanto reported during a press briefing that, alongside the mounting death toll, numerous residents sustained serious and minor injuries from falling debris and collapsing structures. Regional disaster management teams deployed heavy machinery and manual clearing tools to search for survivors trapped beneath damaged houses, warehouses, and public facilities in the Sikka and Manggarai areas.
Hospitals in affected districts reported an influx of patients requiring emergency medical intervention, while local authorities coordinated the distribution of emergency shelters, blankets, and food supplies for displaced families camped on elevated terrain.
Seismic Vulnerability in the Region
Indonesia frequently experiences high levels of seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of intense tectonic friction where multiple continental plates meet. Emergency agencies continue to monitor conditions closely while emergency personnel prioritize search-and-rescue operations in remote coastal pockets.
