BEIJING — Chinese robotics manufacturers used the opening of the World Robot Conference 2026 in Beijing on August 19 to present an advanced generation of humanoid robots capable of industrial and commercial tasks, according to reports from Reuters and People’s Daily. The showcase arrives as tightening trade barriers from the United States prompt domestic firms to accelerate production and eye expansion into international markets outside North America.
At the exhibition, domestic companies demonstrated humanoids performing complex mechanical operations such as parcel sorting, mobile-phone assembly line packaging, and household assistance. Industry representatives emphasized that the sector is shifting its focus away from purely theatrical demonstrations toward practical, real-world deployment. According to figures cited from a Chinese humanoid industry body, global shipments reached approximately 19,100 units during the first half of the year, with Chinese manufacturers capturing more than 97% of that total.
The timing of the showcase coincides with recent regulatory actions in the United States. Reporting from outlets like The Independent and other sources indicates that the U.S. Federal Communications Commission recently advanced measures to block new foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots from the domestic U.S. market, citing national security concerns directed primarily at Chinese suppliers.
Chinese officials and industry leaders have pushed back against the restrictions. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning criticized the U.S. policy as an overreach of national security arguments. Meanwhile, executives such as Unitree CEO Wang Xingxing framed the regulatory pressure as a catalyst for domestic innovation and a milestone toward broader productization, pointing to rapid advancements in embodied artificial intelligence.
With access to the U.S. market increasingly constrained, manufacturers at the Beijing conference signaled a strategic pivot toward Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Euronews reported that firms are actively exploring partnerships in these regions to absorb high-volume output as domestic manufacturing scales up.
