South Korea's Entire Breaking Quartet Secures Places in Final Eight

All four members of South Korea’s breaking national team advanced to the quarterfinals following dominant performances in the round of 16 at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, according to reports from sports outlets including Sports Chosun. The preliminary rounds, held at the Aichi Sky Expo in Tokoname, Japan, set the stage for the medal-round matches scheduled for October 3.

In the men’s division, veteran B-boy Kim Hong-yeol defeated Thailand’s Natapon Patkamwong 2-0, sweeping both rounds with unanimous 9-0 scores from the judges. Fellow South Korean competitor Kim Heon-woo also advanced by overcoming Kazakhstan’s Dias Aubakirov 2-0, posting a combined 14-4 score across the rounds.

The women’s bracket mirrored the men’s success. Kwon Sung-hee secured a 2-0 victory against Kazakhstan’s Aizara Zhumabekova with a 16-2 point advantage in total votes, while Kim Ye-ri defeated Vietnam’s Vo Thi Thanh Huong 2-0 with consecutive 9-0 round scores. The results complete a clean sweep for the South Korean contingent, guaranteeing that all four athletes remain in contention as the tournament progresses.

Upcoming Quarterfinal Schedule and Format

The knockout stage continues on the afternoon of October 3, with the women’s quarterfinals beginning at 2:00 p.m. local time, followed by the men’s quarterfinals at 2:40 p.m. Breaking matches at the Asian Games utilize a one-on-one battle format where athletes perform alternately to music. A panel of nine judges evaluates competitors across five specific criteria: technical skill, expression, creativity, execution, and musicality.

South Korea is actively pursuing its first-ever breaking gold medal at the Asian Games. At the previous continental competition in Hangzhou, breaking made its official debut as a medal event, where Kim Hong-yeol captured a silver medal in the men’s division. With the entire delegation moving past the opening phase, the team holds strong positioning heading into the decisive medal rounds.
