The municipal administration scheduled a series of enforcement actions to clear remaining disputed structures following the expiration of notice periods linked to public land encroachment on August 30. The operation centers around structures identified along critical municipal corridors, including areas near Kutchery Road, where local authorities previously posted notices directing occupants to vacate or establish legal title.
Legal Battles Over Lawyers' Chambers
The immediate flashpoint involves approximately 72 lawyers' chambers built near the District and Sessions Court, which the Lucknow Municipal Corporation and administrative bodies contend were unlawfully erected on public utility land and pathways.
Legal challenges mounted by the Central Bar Association reached the Supreme Court after the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court directed the issuance of strict removal orders. However, a Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta dismissed the association's special leave petition, declining to interfere with the High Court's directive or stay the administrative action.
During the hearings, the bench rejected proposals for alternative accommodation or mediation, with Justice Nath emphasizing that unauthorised public space encroachments cannot be protected simply because the occupants hold professional standing or elected bar positions.
