Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Manchester City 4-2 in Champions League Thriller

PSG Builds Unassailable First-Half Lead

Paris Saint-Germain defeated Manchester City 4–2 at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, preserving a perfect start to their Champions League title defense and claiming the top spot in the league table after two matches.

The decisive phase of the match occurred during a dominant first-half surge by the French club. Désiré Doué opened the scoring in the 13th minute, before providing the assist for Ousmane Dembélé’s goal just 99 seconds later. Vitinha extended the advantage further with a strike in the 32nd minute, sending PSG into halftime with a comfortable 3–0 lead.

Manchester City Responds After the Interval

Manchester City mounted a strong response in the second half, creating upwards of 20 opportunities and repeatedly testing the visitor's defense. Erling Haaland narrowed the deficit with goals in the 53rd and 75th minutes. However, Maghnes Akliouche netted for PSG in the 62nd minute, reestablishing a two-goal cushion that helped insulate the team against City's sustained pressure. Despite hitting the woodwork and creating multiple openings, City was unable to complete the comeback, and Ferran Torres subsequently missed a late penalty.

Manager Reactions and Standings Impact

Following the match, PSG head coach Luis Enrique admitted that his side had been fortunate to secure the victory, noting that City's second-half performance could easily have yielded a different outcome had more chances been converted. City manager Enzo Maresca emphasized that the overall feeling surrounding his squad remained positive, pointing to the resilient second-half display as a foundation for future fixtures.

The result lifts PSG to first place in the 36-team Champions League standings with six points from two games, while Manchester City drops to 17th place with three points.
