Manchester City Defeats 10-Man Liverpool 3-0 to Extend Premier League Lead

Manchester City preserved its perfect start to the Premier League season on Sunday, October 11, defeating 10-man Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield. The victory moved City to six wins from six matches, placing them at the top of the table on 18 points and three ahead of the chasing pack, while Liverpool dropped to nine points after six games.

The fixture remained tightly contested for the opening hour before changing decisively when Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off following a second yellow card. The numerical disadvantage immediately opened up the pitch, allowing City to capitalize on the shift in momentum.

Second-Half Surge Secures Victory

Erling Haaland broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, registering his sixth league goal in as many matches. Just three minutes later, Jeremy Doku doubled City’s advantage. Rayan Cherki capped the scoring in the 78th minute, while Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk received a stoppage-time yellow card for a cynical foul on Cherki.

The outcome marked Liverpool's first defeat under manager Andoni Iraola, underscoring the severe impact of Gravenberch's dismissal. For City manager Enzo Maresca, the result reinforced an unbeaten opening run and delivered a statement performance at one of the division's most challenging venues. Following the match, Haaland described the occasion as a memorable moment for the club.

Broader Context

The fixture carried heightened significance as City’s first match since an independent commission found the club guilty of 114 breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules. Despite a hostile reception from the Anfield crowd throughout the afternoon, City responded effectively with a dominant second-half display.
