Search and Rescue Operations Underway
Search-and-rescue teams continued combing through mounds of debris in Cairo’s Hadayek El-Qobba district on Wednesday, following the collapse of a five-storey residential building. Emergency services deployed heavy machinery, civil-protection crews, ambulances, and security forces to the site after the structure gave way.
Egyptian authorities confirmed that six people died in the disaster, including three children aged 2, 9, and 13, alongside two women and a man in their 60s. The building's owner was among those killed. Seven other individuals sustained injuries and were transported to Al-Zaitoun Hospital for medical treatment. Rescue personnel previously pulled six residents alive from the rubble, while operations remained active to account for others who were reported missing.
Site Investigation and Precautions
The incident occurred at 5 Haret Abdel Ghaffar, off Teret El-Gabal Street on Al-Khaleej Street, located in a densely populated neighborhood in northern and eastern Cairo. Police established a wide security cordon around the location to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles and clear away wreckage.
Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber visited the site alongside security officials to oversee the response. Municipal authorities temporarily disconnected utility lines—including water, electricity, and gas—surrounding the plot to mitigate secondary hazards. Additionally, executive teams evacuated neighboring residential buildings as a precautionary measure while structural engineers assessed potential collateral damage.
Background on Aging Urban Structures
The collapsed structure was an older building dating back to the 1950s, consisting of a ground floor and four upper stories built with traditional load-bearing walls. Cairo Governorate officials stated that an engineering committee has been tasked with reviewing the structural integrity of adjacent properties. Public prosecution and criminal investigation teams initiated inquiries to determine the precise trigger of the collapse once clearance operations permit a full site examination.
