Tornado Kills Four Construction Workers at Turkish Site in Antalya

A sudden tornado struck a construction site in the Mediterranean coastal province of Antalya, killing four workers and injuring a fifth, according to local officials. The severe weather event hit the Fevzi Çakmak neighborhood in the Kepez district late on October 26.

Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin reported that the violent vortex completely destroyed two shipping containers used as temporary housing for workers at the site. Five workers inside the structures were thrown by the force of the wind. Two individuals died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being transported to local hospitals. Three of the workers who died were Syrian nationals, according to the governor. A fifth worker, housed in a separate container, sustained minor injuries and was reported to be in satisfactory condition.

The storm also toppled a 40-meter tower crane at the construction site, though authorities confirmed that the crane's collapse caused no additional casualties or injuries. Officials emphasized that the fatalities and injuries were exclusively the result of the destruction of the worker containers.

Emergency responders, including police, firefighters, and teams from Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), deployed to the area following the disaster. Drone footage from the scene showed widespread debris, scattered construction materials, and the damaged crane. Local authorities noted that the destruction was highly localized, with no similar storm damage or structural impacts reported in the surrounding neighborhoods.

The tornado struck shortly after Turkey's national weather service issued a yellow-level warning for heavy rain across the region. While Antalya and other parts of the country's southern Mediterranean coastline periodically experience tornadoes, fatalities from such weather events remain rare.
