Powerful Tremor Hits Eastern Indonesia
A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia's Flores region early Saturday, prompting immediate tsunami warnings and widespread evacuation alerts across multiple provinces, according to international monitoring agencies and regional reports.
The shallow underwater earthquake occurred at approximately 04:58 Western Indonesia Time, with its epicenter located roughly north-northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tobago, or near Mbay-Nagekeo, at a depth of about 10 kilometers. The shallow nature of the rupture significantly amplified surface shaking across the region, with residents reporting strong rolling tremors felt for up to two minutes in parts of South Sulawesi, including Makassar and the Selayar Islands.
Tsunami Warnings and Coastal Advisory
Following the mainshock, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an urgent tsunami warning affecting several provinces, including East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi. Authorities instructed coastal residents and individuals near riverbanks to move immediately to higher ground or inland evacuation zones.
Real-time sea level monitoring gauges subsequently recorded minor tsunami waves at various locations, measuring approximately 0.38 meters at Kawapante and 0.94 meters at Maurole, alongside small wave activity detected in Labuan Bajo, Sikka, Dompu, and Tanajampea Island. Emergency officials maintained a high state of alert, advising the public to remain away from beaches and coastal infrastructure until official all-clear declarations are issued.
Aftershocks and Ongoing Assessments
Seismological networks recorded at least three significant aftershocks following the initial rupture, registering magnitudes ranging from 5.6 to 6.1. Regional disaster management teams are actively monitoring seismic activity and conducting field inspections to evaluate infrastructure conditions.
Initial visual assessments from affected communities in Flores indicated localized structural impacts, including minor damage to commercial bank buildings and port infrastructure at Elsay Maumere Port. Emergency response personnel remain deployed across vulnerable coastal districts to assist local populations and verify potential damage reports as recovery and assessment operations continue.
