Investigation Underway After Incident Outside Electorate Office

Independent Australian federal MP Helen Haines remains in critical condition following surgery at Melbourne's Alfred Hospital after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. The incident occurred on Murphy Street at approximately 3:35 p.m. on Monday, October 19, while Haines was retrieving items from the boot of her car.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that a 43-year-old man from nearby Tarrawingee is in police custody. According to Victoria Police and witnesses, the suspect was driving a white Toyota LandCruiser that allegedly executed a U-turn before striking Haines, and reportedly reversed to hit her a second time. Bystanders intervened at the scene, detaining the driver until emergency services arrived. Police also recovered a knife from inside the vehicle.

Law Enforcement and Counter-Terrorism Response

Victoria Police is leading the ongoing investigation with support from the Australian Federal Police, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), and the state's joint counter-terrorism team. Authorities are examining whether the collision was an intentional act, reviewing the suspect's electronic devices and background, and attempting to determine if any prior relationship existed between the driver and the parliamentarian.

While Prime Minister Albanese described the event as an apparent targeted attempt to harm the lawmaker, officials emphasized that a definitive motive has not yet been established and investigations remain at an early stage. No formal charges had been finalized as the inquiry proceeded through its initial phase.

Background on the Lawmaker

Haines, 65, has served as the independent member for the regional Victorian electorate of Indi since 2019. The incident has prompted widespread concern among Australian political figures regarding security and safety for elected representatives.
