Patrick Mahomes' Pregame Drink Triggers Unfounded Online Rumors

Viral Social Media Speculation Debunked Following Sunday Night Broadcast

A broadcast clip showing Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes consuming a small bottle of liquid prior to kickoff on September 20, 2026, sparked widespread and baseless speculation across social media platforms that he was drinking alcohol before the game against the Indianapolis Colts. Outlets including Marca, Yahoo Sports, and For The Win reported on September 21, 2026, that the liquid was actually pickle juice, a common athletic supplement used to prevent or relieve muscle cramps.

The rumor began circulating late Sunday night after NBC cameras captured Mahomes drinking from an unlabeled bottle during pregame preparations. The yellowish hue of the liquid and the rapid manner in which it was consumed led several social media users to post unverified claims suggesting the quarterback was drinking vodka. Within hours, clips of the broadcast drew millions of views and triggered various online theories.

Sports commentators and fact-check reports quickly pushed back against the rumors on Monday morning, confirming there was no official evidence or broadcast indication that Mahomes had consumed alcohol. Publications highlighted that drinking pickle juice is a longstanding routine among professional athletes and members of the Chiefs organization to manage physical strain and muscle fatigue during high-intensity competition.

Pickle juice has frequently been utilized in professional sports settings for its high sodium and electrolyte content, which medical studies suggest can rapidly alleviate muscle cramps by triggering neural reflexes. Neither the National Football League nor the Kansas City Chiefs released an official statement regarding the online speculation, treating the viral rumor as unfounded.
