Pilot Ejects Safely Before Impact in Grand Traverse County
A Texas Air National Guard F-16 fighter jet crashed during a routine training mission near Traverse City, Michigan, prompting local authorities to issue an emergency evacuation order due to a hazardous chemical spill associated with the wreckage. The pilot successfully ejected before the crash and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
The incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. ET in Blair Township, located in Grand Traverse County south of Traverse City, near the intersection of County Road 633 and Blair Townhall Road. Officials from Grand Traverse County emergency management initially instructed residents in the immediate vicinity to shelter indoors, close windows, and turn off ventilation systems. That directive was subsequently expanded into a mandatory one-mile evacuation zone for homes and businesses surrounding the impact site as response teams managed the chemical hazard.
State police and local emergency responders confirmed that the pilot was the sole occupant of the aircraft and that no civilian injuries or structural damage to nearby properties were reported. The aircraft involved was identified as an F-16 Fighting Falcon assigned to the Texas Air National Guard’s 149th Fighter Wing, which was participating in training exercises linked to operations based out of Alpena, Michigan.
Ongoing Response and Investigation
Emergency crews, hazardous materials teams, and military investigators remained active at the scene through the evening. Authorities maintained the one-mile evacuation perimeter while containment and cleanup procedures continued. Military officials stated that the cause of the mishap has not yet been determined and remains under active investigation.
The 149th Fighter Wing operates out of Joint Base San-Antonio-Lackland in Texas, frequently utilizing northern Michigan airspace and facilities for specialized training exercises. Further updates regarding the cleanup effort and the preliminary findings of the crash investigation are expected as federal and state authorities process the site data.
