Military Authorities Confirm Fatal Incident
Two U.S. Army soldiers were killed on Wednesday afternoon when an AH-64E Apache attack helicopter crashed into an open field near Salado, Texas, sparking a wildfire that prompted local evacuations, according to military and local officials.
The aircraft, assigned to Fort Hood, went down between approximately 1:33 p.m. and 1:35 p.m. local time. The Bell County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 emergency calls reporting the crash, and deputies arriving at the scene found the aircraft engulfed in flames alongside an active grass fire.
Bell County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Cliff Coleman confirmed that the helicopter came down entirely in an open field, striking no residential structures or buildings. Ground officials verified that there were no injuries reported among civilians.
Wildfire Response and Evacuations
The impact ignited a large grass fire that ultimately burned more than 150 acres south of the Fort Hood installation. Local emergency response teams and fire units worked alongside military personnel to contain the blaze.
The fire forced the temporary evacuation of several homes located near the crash site as crews battled heavy smoke and active flames. Fort Hood personnel immediately coordinated with local first responders to secure the perimeter and assist with firefighting efforts.
Investigation Underway
Both individuals aboard the aircraft were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities stated that their identities are being withheld pending formal notification of next of kin.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott acknowledged the fatalities in a public statement, confirming that two military members lost their lives during operations tied to the Fort Hood base. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by military safety officials.
