Solemn Gatherings and Memorials Nationwide
Communities across the United States are holding solemn memorial events today to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Commemorations span from national sites in New York City and the Pentagon to local fire stations, parks, and civic centers across multiple states.
In New York City, the primary national commemoration is underway at the 9/11 Memorial. Vice President JD Vance, former President Joe Biden, and a wide array of national and local figures joined victims’ relatives for the observance. The program follows its traditional structure, centering on moments of silence corresponding to the timing of the plane strikes and the collapse of the towers, alongside the continuous reading of the victims' names.
Official remembrances are also taking place at the Pentagon, where the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial was temporarily closed to the general public during the morning hours to accommodate the official ceremony. Additional observances are being held at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Local Observations and Regional Events
Beyond the principal federal and municipal sites, local municipalities have organized synchronized tributes. In New York’s Capital Region, the City of Troy initiated a morning service, while Glens Falls observed 25 seconds of silence at 9:03 a.m. Other area towns, including Hudson Falls, Albany, Warren County, Mechanicville, Ballston Spa, and Halfmoon, scheduled staggered events, memorial masses, and evening flag displays.
Similar local gatherings are taking place nationwide. In Wisconsin, communities such as Merrill, Plover, and Marshfield coordinated memorial walks, exhibits, and stair climbs, highlighted by a 25th-anniversary ceremony at the Marshfield Fire Station. In Arizona, municipalities including Apache Junction and Gilbert scheduled morning and evening events at local memorial plazas to honor the victims and first responders.
The coordinated observances reflect a nationwide focus on public remembrance, with vigils, flag displays, and community readings serving as the central features of the milestone anniversary.
