Emergency Response Continues After Strikes Hit Residential Blocks
A day of mourning was declared in Zaporizhzhia on October 11 following a wave of Russian aerial bomb strikes that hit residential areas of the southeastern Ukrainian city, according to local officials and the Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne. The attacks, which occurred on October 10, resulted in at least 15 fatalities—including three children—and left numerous others injured, according to Ukrainian emergency services.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the assault involved five Russian glide bombs that directly struck residential infrastructure, including a five-storey apartment building. The blasts completely destroyed entrances to two apartment blocks while heavily damaging a private home, a garage, and surrounding vehicles and residential properties. Rescue workers and emergency teams immediately deployed to the site, conducting continuous search-and-rescue operations to locate individuals feared trapped beneath the heavy rubble of the collapsed structures.
Casualties and Official Response
The death toll rose throughout October 10 as rescue crews pulled victims from the debris. Initial official reports recorded lower figures before updating to reflect the higher toll. Ukrainian emergency services confirmed that at least 16 people sustained injuries, with multiple victims requiring hospital treatment and at least two individuals reported to be in serious condition.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike, highlighting the use of multiple glide bombs targeting civilian residential areas. In response to the high number of casualties, local authorities opened a formal criminal investigation into the bombardment as a suspected war crime.
Search operations and casualty verification efforts extended into October 11 as emergency personnel worked to clear the remaining rubble and confirm the final number of affected residents. The citywide day of mourning was established to honor those killed in the residential sector.
