Fire Breaks Out on Exterior Signage Near Subway Station
A fire erupted on the exterior sign of a five-story commercial building near Cheolsan Station in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province, prompting the safe evacuation of 20 people according to local fire authorities. The incident occurred during the evening commute hours, causing temporary concern among commuters and residents in the busy commercial district.
According to emergency officials, the fire started at approximately 7:05 p.m. on August 31, 2026, near Subway Line 7's Cheolsan Station in Cheolsan-dong. Flames and smoke quickly caught the attention of witnesses as the fire took hold of the building's exterior signage and part of the outer wall.
Rapid Emergency Response Prevents Casualties
Local fire and rescue units arrived at the scene shortly after the initial alarm. Firefighters deployed equipment to tackle the exterior flames, managing to completely extinguish the blaze within roughly 10 to 20 minutes, by approximately 7:23 to 7:25 p.m.
Authorities confirmed that 20 occupants, including visitors inside the commercial structure at the time, successfully self-evacuated before the fire could spread further into the interior of the building. No injuries or casualties were reported as a result of the incident.
Investigation Underway
Following the suppression of the fire, police and fire department investigators secured the area to conduct a joint inspection. Authorities are currently working to determine the exact cause of the blaze and to assess the total extent of the property damage sustained by the building's exterior.
