Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the fifth edition of SEMICON India at the Yashobhoomi convention center in New Delhi, setting off a three-day exhibition focused on expanding the country's domestic technology manufacturing base.
Running from September 17 to September 19, the conference operates under the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem”. The event brings together policymakers, international executives, researchers, startups, and academic delegates to coordinate strategies across the semiconductor value chain, spanning raw materials, chip design, fabrication, and advanced packaging.
According to official figures released by the Press Information Bureau, the exhibition features more than 600 participating companies and delegates representing 52 countries. International participation includes dedicated country pavilions from Japan, South Korea, the Netherlands, Singapore, Malaysia, and Sweden, alongside twelve state booths and specialized areas for startup showcases and workforce development.
Ahead of the formal inauguration, Prime Minister Modi interacted with global chief executives and senior leadership from major international and domestic semiconductor firms, including representatives from Micron, Infineon, Applied Materials, ASML, Tokyo Electron, and Tata Electronics. Discussions centered on accelerating commercial production milestones and expanding supply chain integration within India.
The conference arrives as India pushes forward with successive phases of its national semiconductor strategy, seeking to establish a resilient domestic foundation for electronics production that supplies automotive, telecommunications, and defense sectors. Parallel sessions over the next three days will feature industry roundtables, workforce initiatives, and specialized forums addressing display technology and leadership development.
