Zheng Survives Bouzkova Test in Beijing
Chinese tennis star Zheng Qinwen advanced to the women's singles round of 16 at the China Open on October 5, overcoming 18th-seeded Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic 7–6(3), 4–6, 7–5 at the National Tennis Center in Beijing.
The hard-fought encounter lasted two hours and 54 minutes, marking Zheng's third consecutive three-set victory of the tournament. After securing the opening set in a tiebreak, Zheng dropped the second set as Bouzkova capitalized on early errors and built a 3–0 lead. The deciding set remained on serve until the 12th game, when Zheng converted a crucial break to seal the match and secure her spot in the next round.
Following the victory, Zheng addressed the physical and mental demands of competing as a home favorite at the WTA 1000 event. Having spent over eight hours on court across her opening matches, the wild-card entry noted that the heavy expectations of playing in front of a domestic crowd create a unique challenge. "I felt I really play with a lot of pressure because I want to perform well in front of my home crowd," Zheng told reporters. "Of course, I'm really happy to have won because I felt my opponent was maybe playing without pressure".
Upcoming Fourth-Round Matchup
Zheng is scheduled to face Alina Charaeva in the fourth round on Wednesday, October 7. Charaeva, ranked 118th, has emerged as one of the tournament's biggest surprises, reaching the round of 16 at a WTA 1000 event for the first time. The qualifier's run includes a second-round upset victory over top seed and newly crowned world No. 1 Elena Rybakina, followed by a straight-sets win over Britain's Sonay Kartal.
Zheng holds a 1–0 head-to-head advantage over Charaeva, having previously won their encounter in a three-set match in Marbella six years ago. The winner of Wednesday's contest will advance to the quarterfinals to face either Elina Svitolina or Ann Li.
Tournament Background
The China Open is a premier WTA 1000 hard-court tournament held annually in Beijing, offering a total prize pool of over $9.4 million. Zheng's progression to the round of 16 represents her deepest run at the tournament since reaching the semifinals in 2024.
