IDF Launches Multi-Day Military Operation in Hebron Following Deadly Checkpoint Shooting

Israeli security forces have launched a multi-day counterterrorism operation in the West Bank city of Hebron following a shooting attack that killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded three others. The operation, conducted jointly by the Israel Defense Forces, the Shin Bet security agency, and Border Police, involves systematic searches for militant infrastructure, weapons seizures, and the interrogation of dozens of suspects.

The attack occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. on October 23 at a temporary checkpoint near the Yehuda Junction outside Hebron. According to the military, two Palestinian gunmen arrived by vehicle and opened fire on soldiers. The two soldiers killed were identified as Staff Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman, 23, from Ashkelon, and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem, 20, from Hod Hasharon. Three additional soldiers sustained light to moderate injuries. Israeli forces returned fire and killed both attackers at the scene.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and defense officials visited the area and ordered a broader cordon of Hebron and neighboring Halhul, alongside a wider closure restricting entry and exit points across parts of the West Bank. The military stated that the ongoing operation is targeted at the specific neighborhoods from which the assailants originated, with authorities reviewing intelligence to determine whether the attackers acted independently or on behalf of a wider network.

Concurrently, security forces began mapping the homes of the attackers and carrying out localized demolitions of structures deemed to pose security risks near the site of the incident. Human rights advocates and local sources reported that the initial phases of the enforcement measures included leveling land and tearing down structures in the western sector of Hebron, drawing immediate legal and local scrutiny.

The confrontation has further heightened security alertness across the West Bank amid broader regional tensions. Israeli authorities indicated that the sweeps and roadblocks in and around Hebron are expected to remain active for several days while investigations continue.
